[我和科学] Hearing impairment is a common sensory and communication disorder. Human patients with this disorder have difficulty in perceiving alerts, appreciating music and especially conversation. Auditory hair cells convert sound information into electrical signals that are then relayed to the brain, which make them as a major target in developing therapeutic approaches for preventing and treating hearing impairment. My research has been studying molecular and cellular mechanisms of hair-cell mechanotransduction that are critical for sound detection. In our lab, we are determining genes linked to hearing loss and elucidating the underlying mechanisms. Our long-term goal is to understand the molecular basis of the hair-cell physiology and auditory plasticity in developing and diseased brains.
